The price-performance pitch

Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 runs more than 30 percent faster than its predecessor and can cost up to 30 percent less per task, while keeping the same headline input and output token prices. Google is emphasizing multi-model routing, spend caps, and other cost controls in its enterprise-agent launch. These are vendor claims, not universal outcomes, but they point in the same direction: providers want buyers to judge the whole task, not the sticker price of a token.

Why cheaper is not the same as productive

A cheaper model can reduce the bill for a stable workload. It does not choose the right workflow, clean the underlying data, negotiate permissions, train reviewers, or decide what happens when an agent is wrong. Many companies will see model costs fall while integration and supervision costs remain stubborn.

Measure the operating unit

The right denominator is a completed, reviewed business task: a reconciled report, a resolved support case, a tested code change, or a qualified research memo. Include model usage, software, integration, review time, corrections, and failure recovery. A lower token bill paired with more checking is not leverage.

The organizational lag

Model releases can happen weekly; operating models do not. Teams need ownership, access rules, evaluation sets, and a way to retire experiments that never become workflows. The companies that benefit most may not be the earliest adopters, but the ones that can repeatedly convert a capability change into a measured process change.

  • Buyers publishing cost per completed task rather than cost per token.
  • Enterprise routing systems that move work among models based on risk and complexity.
  • Finance teams separating pilot spend from production AI operating costs.
