From cell helper to workflow

The spreadsheet assistant is no longer confined to suggesting a formula. Google now describes its work agent as operating inline across Workspace, including Sheets, while connecting to business context and other systems. The pitch is a workflow that can gather information, analyze it, and return a finished deliverable without forcing the user to move between separate assistants.

Where it earns trust

The strongest tasks remain unglamorous: cleaning categories, matching records, explaining a variance, drafting a formula, or preparing a first-pass weekly report. These jobs have visible inputs and outputs. A reviewer can sample the work, compare totals, and decide whether the saved time is real.

Where it loses trust

Cross-tool access can turn a mistaken assumption into a larger operational error. A number pulled from the wrong sheet, a stale definition, or an incorrect join may travel into a deck, an email, and a management decision. The interface should keep the source range, transformation, model action, and reviewer visible all the way through.

The operator's test

Evaluate a spreadsheet agent on four things: whether it cites source cells, whether it exposes formulas and transformations, whether it separates suggestions from applied changes, and whether a manager can reproduce the result. The goal is not fewer clicks at any cost. It is faster work that remains inspectable.
